Key West, FL — One of the most important traits parents look for in babysitters is someone who is safe and responsible and knows what to do if things go wrong. Red Cross-trained babysitters know what to do in any situation.

“I learned a lot and it was good knowledge,”  said Red Cross certified babysitter Alice Tallmadge,15, who enjoyed the class which has helped her as a current babysitter.  “It was fun and not boring at all.  They made it interesting and we worked in groups so there was a lot of one-on-one time.  I’m glad I’d know what to do if a baby was choking.”

For those teens who are trying to decide whether or not to sign up for the course, Tallmadge says, “It’s worth taking because the info isn’t just about babies---it’s stuff you use in real life as well.”

Designed for 11 to 15 year olds, the Babysitter’s Plus Training course can help teens care for children and infants, be a good leader and role model, make good decisions and solve problems, keep the children they baby-sit and themselves safe, and handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents.  It’s useful, pertinent information that will benefit anyone who works with infants and toddlers. Certification in First Aid is included.

The next class in Key West is June 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration is $78 at the American Red Cross. Call 305-296-4033 to register.
